You may be worried stiff that you seem to be less interested and
your body is not quite responding to stimuli as it used to. But you
can take some heart by knowing that you are not alone and as many
as 40% of women go through these symptoms at some stage of their
life or other.
There are some conditions that are known traditionally as female sexual dysfunctions.
These are symptoms where an individual is having repeated problems in the realm of sexual
desire and response with the added effect of causing tension in relationship with one’s partner.
While there could be a large number of causes and also effects of female sexual dysfunction,
one need not fear as they are mostly all treatable. Some of the first steps that one can take in
this matter is to express concerns and fears as well as understanding one’s body so as to
restore sexual health.
The most common occurrence of female sexual dysfunction is when hormones are in some
sort of disturbed mode. This can occur at any age but it is more likely just after pregnancy
and when menopause is imminent or during severe, illness like cancer.
Some of the main symptoms of female sexual dysfunction are follows, which can be seen by:
- Decreased interest and desire for sex.
- Lower arousal so that sexual activity cannot be maintained coupled with an
inability to have any desire for sex.
- Absence of orgasm and lowered sexual satisfaction.
- Sexual intercourse followed by pain.
There could be quite a few causes and reasons why the symptoms of sexual dysfunction
occur.
Some of these causes are also related one to the other like:
• Physical: There are many physiological causes of the syndrome. Some of these are urinary
tract and bowel problems, arthritis, pelvic surgery and headaches too.
In some other cases, there could be neurological problems like multiple sclerosis or even
consumption of blood pressure medicines and antidepressants. Other medicines that cause
problems are antihistamines and chemotherapy drugs. All of these can severely lower sexual
appetite and desire.
• Hormones: Sometimes the hormones like estrogen are reduced due to the onset of
menopause as well as the degeneration of genital tissues which lower sexual desire. The
clitoris area also becomes much more exposed as the skin folds that cover the labial portion
also become thin.
All of this causes a prickly or tingling sensation that is quite burdensome and problematic.
Sometimes the lining of the vagina also thins out and the elasticity is reduced which means
that the vagina needs more stimulation and lubrication at the time of sexual contact, in turn
causing dyspareunia which is painful sexual contact and lowered ability to experience orgasm.
In other cases, after birth and in lactation, the vagina could get dry leading to lowered sexual
desire.
• Psycho-social factors: Depression and its treatment is quite an important cause of sexual
dysfunction as are fears about pregnancy and just after giving birth as well as marital discord
and incompatibility between husband and wife. Women would experience emotional distress
and can also have the dysfunction in sex which needs to be treated immediately. You need to
know the root causes of the dysfunction and remove these to have the peace of mind and a
happy sexual life too.
